Football Bar-B-Q and Scrimmage A Great Success
The team held an open scrimmage Saturday at 10:00a.m. in front of a excited crowd of Crusader family and friends; they were not disappointed. Both sides of the ball looked good as the offense- in Blue- took the field against the scout defense -in white. The offense moved the ball consistently, scoring 5 touchdowns against a strong showing by the undermanned scout defense. Quarterback, Mikey Martin missed a couple of early throws, then regained his confidence, staying cool under pressure. He connected with several receivers, for some big gains. The run game was potent, as expected, early on. Charles Pommels, Jake Sofianos, and Stanley Durbin got the bulk of the carries. Each running back showed their skills are primed and ready for the start of the season, evidenced by some quick cuts, long runs, and several touchdowns. The big plays slowed for a short time as several players made key plays for the scout defense. Kristoff White, Daion Donaldson, and Barrett Teeters were in on several defensive plays, including causing and recovering a fumble late in the scrimmage. However, the offense was able to regain its power, capped by a long throw and catch from Mikey to TE, Kyle Boutin, for a touchdown to end the Offense's half of the scrimmage.
After a short break and a quick stretch, the starting defense took the field. The defense was up against a hungry scout offense, that included Offensive Coordinator, Matt Van Praag (QB), and assistant coach Andy Holz (WR). The starting defense was on top of its game for the bulk of the scrimmage. Runs were hard to come by and most passes were challenged. Defensive ends, Austin Fitzgerald and Charles Pommels, made several sacks in the backfield. Newcomer Greg Pelicier(DT),ripped through the middle on more than one occasion. Tackling, a concern going into 2-A-Days, was much improved in the scrimmage. The linebacking core of Kyle Boutin, Barrett Teeters, and Jeremy Varsallone filled gaps quickly and communicated well together. The talented core of defensive backs were poised, breaking up several passes. The defense did allow one touchdown on a deep route by former quarterback Zack Holz down the sideline. While there is still some room for improvement, the defense had a good showing overall.
The fun didn't stop after the scrimmage ended. The team, family, and friends enjoyed a great BBQ in the courtyard and cafeteria. The coaching staff thanks all who were able to attend, and huge THANK YOU to all who helped make the Pre-Season Scrimmage/BBQ a success.
